Earlier this month, Ploutos organized the first webinar on collaborative sustainable business model archetypes and how these work in practice! Using the presentation of the methodology as the foundation, participants had the chance to apply it by using a practical example from the Ploutos pilots. The example concerned the grapevine sector, which is prominent in Europe and especially in Italy that produces 49.1% of the wine in the EU.
Despite the fact that farmers are partially practicing sustainable vineyard management, greenhouse emissions still pose a major issue for production, while at the same time farmers are not remunerated for Carbon Credits (CCs) they save through the above practice. By deploying technological innovations (i.e. calculation and tracing of CCs, parametric insurance, etc) and combining them with business incentives, such as payments for ecosystem services (PESs), Ploutos aims to rebalance the specific value chain! Through a certified Verified Emission Reduction system farmers will be able to make the saved CCs available to potential buyers and be remunerated for them, creating an additional income.
Apart from the farmers, multiple gains will also be generated for other actors and the wider ecosystem. Reduction of operations (i.e. plant protection interventions) and their respective impacts, increase of awareness on climate change issues and the way the agricultural sector can contribute towards that, are only some of them.
The webinar was organised in the context of Ploutos, an EU project that aims to re-balance the agri-food value chain and make it more sustainable by combining business, behavior and technology innovations.
